How Well Is Your Organization’s Interviewing System Working?

Improve the quality of your hiring pipeline by creating a state-of-the-art interviewing process.

The lifeblood of every organization is its ability to attract top talent. The hiring pipeline should have high candidate engagement every step of the way. It should reflect the brand, culture and values of the organization. Every candidate, whether successful or not, should walk away having a positive appreciation of the organization. Crafting and executing an intelligent and targeted interviewing program is an integral part of the hiring funnel. Great care needs to be taken for identifying the ideal candidate in terms of both skills and attitudes. Interviewers need to be well-versed in the intricacies of interviewing, across many levels. The style and methodology of interviewing should be appropriate to the organization and the role. Candidate assessments, homework, questions, tasks and all else should fit a coherent theme and overall strategy.

  • How well does your interviewing process differentiate between high-performance candidates and low performance candidates? Attracting and keeping highly qualified people who have the right attitude, and who fit your culture is the name of the game. If you’re not doing that, you’re creating high turnover, and disruptions in your organization, costing a great deal of money and time to resolve.

  • Are you being clear about the pathway throughout your interviewing process? Candidates deserve a transparent explanation of what they’re getting into with regard to the interviewing process. This is their first introduction to the company and it should be a clear one, not a confusing one.

  • Are you intentional about making your interviewing process a showcase for your company’s brand? Candidates leave an interview and tell their friends about the company. They go on social media and tell the world about the company. The prime experience candidates have for understanding the company is the interview. Interviewers need to be intentional about the image they present to candidates.

  • Are you sure that your interviewing process is creating candidate engagement? In a candidate-driven market, it’s critical that a company can create fast rapport and trust with candidates. The best companies show a candidate respect. They realize that candidates are interviewing with more than one company, and they have choices.

  • Does your interviewing process create a welcoming environment? It’s important to think carefully about the tone of the interviews you conduct. If you do not intend to have a stress or hostile interview format, are you positive that the candidate is not perceiving it that way? Candidates pick up on the type of questions, body language, eye contact and attitude of the interviewer. Being intentional is paramount.

  • Does your interviewing process differentiate between high-performance candidates and low performance candidates? For example, a professional board of examiners should not give an examination where everyone scores 100%. The board wants to determine who should be certified and who should be denied. Interviewing should be the same. Interviewers should craft questions that demonstrate the difference between candidates.

  • Does your interviewing process inordinately focus on resumes, backgrounds, skills and capabilities to the exclusion of attitudes? It’s a mistake to ignore attitude. A high-performance organization wants people with a positive mindset, those who seek challenges and those who can get along with others. The optimal mix of these attributes depends on the company, their culture, the industry and the role.

18 Ways We Can Help You Improve Your Organization’s Interviewing Process

  1. Review your existing interviewing program and make recommendations.

  2. Help you craft candidate engagement strategies.

  3. Create a video archive on specialized interviewing topics. These would live in your company training center digitally. We recommend shorter rather than longer videos because people are more inclined to view shorter videos. Shorter videos can also be better targeted to a specific topic.

  4. Help you craft surveys for your team, identifying high performance candidate characteristics and low performance candidate characteristics which can be tested for during the interview process.

  5. Interview your senior / best interviewers in the company to discover their best practices. These would be captured on video for your archival use, and also delivered as a written report.

  6. Review your company’s list of interview questions and make recommendations.

  7. Help you craft interview questions and a candidate answer response chart which differentiates between high performance and low performance candidates.

  8. Evaluate actual video interviews with candidates and make recommendations.

  9. Help you create candidate report cards.

  10. Help you create self-report interviewer report cards.

  11. Help you create a candidate report card to critique the interviewer for post interview feedback.

  12. Conduct peer-to-peer role-playing exercises with your interviewers, providing feedback.

  13. Conduct role-playing exercises with Bill Cole and your interviewers, providing feedback.

  14. Help you craft in-tray exercises when appropriate.

Testimonials for Bill Cole's Interview Coaching

Bill has worked both sides of the table by helping companies improve their interviewing process, and he’s also helped thousands of people wishing to put their best foot forward in an interview. Here is one representative testimonial from a grateful client.

"One of the things I found most helpful from Bill was his helping me to identify which work stories I was going to use to answer a range of questions that asked me to describe my successes in behavioral type questions. Bill also helped me develop a strong solid message to say at the very end of the interview instead of asking the usual 'what's the next step' type of questions. He is direct, articulate, and phrases his comments in a way that encourages you to try harder. There is an art to giving feedback without people getting defensive and Bill has this down pat!"
